Watercolor Workshop: Starry Sky (Pt. 1)

In Part 1 of Watercolor Starry Sky, you’ll learn how to do a background “sunset” wash with watercolor, as in the photo below:

Read on for a list of supplies you’ll need to complete this project. If you’d like to learn more about watercolors, check out our Art Projects DVD: Peaceful Seas:

To complete this project, you’ll need:

Watercolor paper (5″x7″)
Blue Painter’s Tape
Watercolors
A flat brush (for wetting the paper)
A large round brush (for applying the watercolor)

Here is what I used in this video:

Watercolor Paper (In this project I’m using Arches 300lb Cold Press.)

Watercolors (You can use any watercolors, but for this project I’m using  Yarka Semi-moist Pans.)

Brushes:

3″ Bristle Brush

Synthetic squirrel round brush – Size 24

How to Paint a Watercolor Solar Eclipse, Pt. 3

In part 3 of the Watercolor Solar Eclipse project, Jim demonstrates how to add some fluorescent (black light) stars and a foreground to this mixed media project.

New supplies you’ll need:
–Fluorescent yellow acrylic paint (for the stars)
–Black permanent marker (for the foreground trees)

Watercolor Solar Eclipse, Pt. 2

In part two of the Watercolor Solar Eclipse project, Jim Pence demonstrates how to paint the total eclipse. A highlight of this lesson is using fluorescent color pencils to draw the sun’s corona under a black light.

Supplies needed for this part can be found at most arts and crafts stores or at the links below:

— Liquid mask removal tool: http://www.dickblick.com/products/crepe-rubber-cement-pickup/

— Watercolors: Any watercolors will work for this part of the project.

How to Paint a Solar Eclipse in Watercolor

This is part one of a three-part, mixed media project (watercolor, permanent marker, fluorescent acrylic, and fluorescent colored pencils). The subject is a total solar eclipse.

To complete this part of the project you will need:

1. Watercolor paper
2. Watercolors (blue, red, and yellow)
3. Pencil
4. Liquid mask or painter’s tape
5. Small jar lid (the one I use is from a gallon jug).
